    Curatorial note from Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities: This exercise is about bringing aspects of research prototyping into the classroom. In the example, students could choose between two experiments. The first was in structured surfaces, where a data visualization (for example, a map) is used as the basis for an argument that is made by superimposing additional information (such as pins on the map). The second was in attempting to accommodate big data on a wall-sized display. As a classroom activity, this exercise does not require that the students have some skill in normal forms of interface design, since those skills may help with the technical aspects but may interfere with the imaginative activity of representing data. What is important is that the students are proficient in some form of representation, whether through sketching by hand, using tools like those in the Adobe Creative Cloud, or using online tools for prototyping

    The Beginning, The Middle, and The End: New Tools for the Scholarly Edition

    This article discusses a set of prototypes currently being designed and created by the Interface Design team of the Implementing New Knowledge Environments (INKE) project. These prototypes attempt to supplement the user experience in reading digital scholarly editions, by supporting a set of tasks that are straightforward in a digital environment but in a print edition would be sufficiently more difficult as to be prohibitive. We therefore offer these experimental prototypes as a collection of new affordances for the scholarly edition, although they may reasonably be extended, with some variation, to other kinds of digital text

    Modeling design conversation

    In this paper it is reported the development of an experimental 3D physical analytical system for doing qualitative analysis, and how we examined its use in supporting conversation among the members of a design team. Our larger goals in this project were to increase the engagement of designers in collaborative analysis, and to improve the quality of the outcomes. In this paper, we concentrate on trying to understand the role of conversation in reaching these two goals. In total, we have done a series of 14 workshops; here, we discuss in detail, as a case study, just one of the sessions. We chose it because it was quite sophisticated in the sense that the participants rejected the brief and yet produced a complex meta-interpretation of the data. En este artículo, se presenta el desarrollo experimental del sistema analítico físico 3D para la realización de análisis cualitativos y cómo ha contribuido al proceso de reflexión ente los miembros del equipo de diseño. El objetivo principal de este proyecto ha sido incrementar el involucramiento de los diseñadores en los análisis colaborativos y mejorar la calidad de sus resultados. Este texto se ha focalizado en entender el rol de la conversación en la consecución de los dos objetivos. En total, se han realizado una serie de 14 workshops. Aquí se presenta en detalle, como caso de estudio, sólo una de las sesiones, seleccionada debido a que posee un estándar bastante sofisticado en relación a que los participantes rechazaron la brevedad analítica para producir, en cambio, una compleja meta-interpretación de la información.Este artigo apresenta o desenvolvimento experimental de um sistema analítico físico 3D para a realização de análise qualitativa e como ele tem contribuído para o processo de reflexão entre os membros da equipe de design. O principal objetivo deste projeto tem sido aumentar o envolvimento de designers na análise colaborativo e melhorar a qualidade dos seus resultados. Este texto tem como foco a compreensão do papel da conversa na realização dos objetivos. No total, houve uma série de 14 workshops. Aqui é apresentada em detalhe, como estudo de caso, apenas uma das sessões, selecionada porque ela tem um padrão bastante sofisticado: os participantes rejeitaram a brevidade analítica para produzir, em vez disso, uma meta-interpretação complexa de informação

    Prototypes as Objects of Study

    Curatorial note from Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities: For many disciplines, the object of study does not yet exist—it is a possible future. In this assignment, students are asked to design a set of research tools consisting of a prototype, pilot study, experimental design, and quasi-experimental design (which mines existing data for factors that would have been controlled had the researcher set up the original study). The different approaches can be compared in terms of the resources required and the kind of knowledge that can be gained. For use in a course, it may be helpful to plan a series of classes where each of the research tools is discussed in turn, with examples from the literature. The students can then describe ways in which their own research could be supported with each approach, resulting in a report that describes how those research tools would be created and deployed in each case
